Concerned that his recent journey into his past has left him increasingly feral, Wolverine undergoes a series of high-intensity tests in the Danger Room and a virtual reality simulation while Professor X and the X-Men watch with growing alarm. Seeking an escape from their scrutiny, Logan heads to a local bar where he connects with a mysterious blonde woman and eventually retreats to a seedy motel. The rendezvous takes a bizarre turn when the woman is revealed to be the shapeshifter Mystique, who has assumed various forms—including Jean Grey—to hide from a perceived threat. Just as Logan realizes he is being used as a bodyguard, the six-armed interdimensional sorceress Spiral crashes into the room, intent on hunting down the terrified Mystique.
