As J. Jonah Jameson prepares to dedicate the brand new Daily Bugle building with a typically long-winded speech and a self-indulgent statue, an underlying threat stirs in the city's maintenance tunnels. Peter Parker's spider-sense alerts him to a sinister presence, leading to a brutal confrontation beneath the streets where Doctor Octopus ambushes the wall-crawler and leaves him buried under a mountain of debris. While Spider-Man struggles to break free from the rubble and stop a ticking vibrational device, the six-armed villain storm's Jameson’s office to kidnap Mary Jane and demand a staggering $20 million ransom.
