The sentient planet Ego, compelled to consume life to maintain his form after overpowering Galactus's rocket engine, hunts down the Silver Surfer. As Ego attempts to absorb the hero, the Silver Surfer strategically uses Galactus's engine to overwhelm the living planet's control over his own orbit. In a desperate move to regain his planetary stability, Ego is forced to strike a deal, granting the Silver Surfer his freedom in exchange for control of his path.
