Darkseid's oppressive force looms, threatening to extinguish the last sparks of free humanity. While Checkmate Castle is under siege and the Justice Society battles grim odds, hope seems distant as Green Lanterns are stranded, Batman is missing, and Superman is in the 31st century. Yet, the remaining heroes rise to the occasion, proving their mettle against impossible odds. As Checkmate plans a desperate retreat into the multiverse, a seemingly deceased hero emerges, posing the first true challenge to Darkseid's reign.
