The Beast, Iceman, and Gargoyle travel to New Jersey to visit the Vision and the Scarlet Witch, hoping to recruit them for a new superhero roster. However, their domestic dinner is abruptly shattered when they are ambushed by a trio of unusual Secret Empire villains—Cloud, Seraph, and Harridan—who intend to abduct the Vision. As the other heroes fall victim to the villains' unique power-draining abilities, it falls entirely on the immortal Gargoyle to turn the tide of the battle. Meanwhile, a mysterious elf leads the original members of the team on a strange and dangerous trek through the timestream, eventually stranding them in a desolate future wasteland.
