Michael is keenly aware of the strange things lurking just out of sight, a secret he now shares with the mysterious homeless woman named Mercy. When Michael intervenes in a brutal act of torture ordered by the villainous Chasm, he is attacked but manages to escape without fear. His fearless retreat inadvertently pulls him into the adjacent, horrifying Substratum, where the previously invisible monsters are now fully manifest and confront him.
