In the Nevada desert, Cinnabar Flats descends into chaos as the US military's nuclear test coincides with an alien scientist's machine powering up, giving birth to new powers. The military investigates the resulting glowing sphere, known as "The Vortex," sending troops into the site of unimaginable events. David MacRae, transforming into Hero Zero, is drawn into the bizarre battle just as a being of apocalyptic scale emerges from The Vortex itself, leaving the fate of humanity uncertain.
