In a bleak future, Nate's formidable fighting skills are put to the test when he defends himself and the Askani Sister, Aliya, from an onslaught of monstrous insects. Aliya is impressed by his battle prowess and takes him to meet the eccentric Clan Mother, Sanctity. Despite the strict tradition forbidding males from being trained by the Clan, Sanctity immediately recognizes Nate as the prophesied savior and the long-awaited Askani'Son.
