Earth faces imminent destruction as Hawkman and Hawkwoman alert Superman to a massive Thanagarian invasion fleet approaching from near the moon. Despite being severely outgunned, the trio attempts a desperate maneuver called "Operation Overlord" to scatter the enemy forces using a captured command ship, which Superman must carry into space to position. While Superman valiantly distracts the fleet, a catastrophic turn of events forces Hawkman to prematurely activate the Overlord sequence. The Thanagarian threat is neutralized, but the heroes pay a heavy price as the command ship is hurled toward the sun, leaving the unconscious Superman adrift in space.
