Drained of his power by the wicked sorceress Arathaza, a weakened Superman manages to shatter her mystical staff and capture her before she can claim victory. The respite is short-lived as the Phantom Stranger arrives, revealing a new threat: a monstrous mass of earth and stone summoned by the souls of the wicked from the kingdom of the dead. As Superman hurls the physical manifestation of the threat into the sun, the Stranger secures the Sherabite Stone, the artifact used by the undead to conjure the beast and seek vengeance on the living.
